Capacity building of teachers on sustainable energy and efficient use of energy
From May 15th to 17th, the Polytechnic University of Porto hosted the Sustainable Energy Workshop under the SECOVE project, which brought together educators, students, municipality representatives, and industry leaders to enhance their understanding and application of sustainable and efficient energy practices. The workshop was part of an initiative to integrate sustainable energy topics more deeply into vocational education and training (VET) frameworks.

Workshop Dynamics and Participation
The event was meticulously planned and saw enthusiastic participation from all attendees. The agenda was packed with structured sessions and collaborative activities, all geared towards making sustainable energy concepts accessible and actionable for educators and their students.

Student-Led Innovations
A key feature of the workshop was the presentation of student projects from local VET schools, which showcased innovative solutions in sustainable energy. These projects not only demonstrated the practical application of academic knowledge but also highlighted the students’ ability to contribute real-world solutions to energy challenges. This hands-on approach helps bridge the gap between theoretical studies and practical implementation, encouraging students to engage deeply with the material.
Insights from Educational Site Visits
The participants had the opportunity to visit several public and private entities active in the sustainable energy sector. One of the standout experiences was a tour of the data analysis laboratory of EDP, Portugal’s leading sustainable energy company and the second largest in Europe. These visits offered a first-hand look at the cutting-edge technologies and innovative strategies driving the sustainable energy industry in Portugal and provided benchmarks against which other countries’ practices could be measured.

Interactive Discussions for Enhanced Learning
The workshop facilitated vibrant discussions among participants, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and best practices. These dialogues were crucial for developing new strategies to incorporate sustainable energy topics into VET curricula effectively.
Incorporating Modern Technology in Education
A notable addition to the workshop’s agenda was the demonstration of a virtual reality application intended for use in upcoming courses. This technology exemplifies the modern teaching tools that can enhance the educational experience, making learning more interactive and engaging for students.

Final Thoughts
The Sustainable Energy Workshop at the Polytechnic University of Porto achieved its objectives successfully, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and establishing partnerships. The event underscored the importance of capacity building in education, particularly in empowering teachers to incorporate sustainable and efficient energy practices into their teachings. The collaborative environment not only enriched participants’ understanding of the subject matter but also equipped them with the tools and insights needed to prepare their students for the challenges and opportunities in the sustainable energy sector. This initiative highlights the pivotal role that educational institutions play in shaping the future of energy sustainability.
